What is the "PHIL TUCKER SPIRIT AWARD"?

Why is Phil Tucker so inspirational?

We found that Phil Tucker has a lot in common with filmmakers of this day and age. He persued his love of filmmaking and story telling throughout his life. He did not give up on his passion for filmmaking and kept going through adversity. He did what he could with what was available to him and did not allow money to determine whether or not he would make his films. He used his creativity and ingenuity to make his movies happen. That is very inspirational to us and today's filmmakers.

Phil Tucker, the director of the 1953 classic Z-Movie "Phil Tucker's Robot Monster" (One of the first sci-fi movies shot in 3-D), whose budget was so low he could not afford to have a robot costume made for the title character of the movie. But he did know guy with a good gorilla suit, and had a space helmet made out of papier-mâché, thus our adoption of Ro-Man (see upper left corner of this page) as Zed Fest's mascot. Along with several other somewhat interesting solutions to budget challenges, Phil had refused to allow anything to prevent him from completing his movie. While many people think that this is a bad movie, sometimes refering to it as "So bad, it's good", those among us who have been in the trenches as filmmakers ourselves, marvel at the tenacity and perseverance of this rogue independent filmmaker. We are enthralled and encouraged by this kind of spirit in filmmaking. So the Zed Fest – Phil Tucker Spirit Award is bestowed each year to the filmmaker who we believe had to make the most sacrifices in so-called production value, or best utilized whatever resources were available to them, or…our personal favorite, chose to work in the classic styles and principles of “B” and “Z-Movies”. So if you find that you are a recipient of our “Phil Tucker Spirit Award” it is not because anyone thinks that you made a bad film…rather, we think that you are a badass filmmaker!

The Phil Tucker Spirit Award can be won by any filmmaker from Short Subject to Feature Film.
